    Pet Diabetes

    Pet Diabetes

Many pet owners are unaware that their pets can suffer from diabetes, and would be unsure of the signs and risk factors associated with the disease.

    Is your pet at risk?

Some breeds of dogs, such as Samoyeds, Miniature Schnauzers, Miniature Poodles and pugs are more prone to developing diabetes. In cats, breed does not seem to be a factor.

Female dogs and neutered male cats are more at risk, as is any overweight pet or those aged eight years or over.

Of course, any pet could potentially develop diabetes.

    Signs to look out for

    - increased thirst

    - increased and more frequent urination

    - weight loss

    - increased appetite followed later by a reduction

    - depression

    - vomiting

    - cataracts (in dogs)

    Diagnosis

Blood and urine tests are routinely use to identify diabetes. If you are in any doubt regarding your pet’s health, then please arrange an appointment with one of our Veterinary Surgeons for a thorough health check.

    Treatment

At first, a diagnosis of diabetes can seem a very daunting prospect. However, there really is no need to worry as you will be fully supported by our veterinary team throughout your pet’s treatment. Daily insulin injections plus careful dietary management should mean your pet can lead a full and active life.
