Does your pet have a firework phobia?
Is your cat or dog fearful of fireworks or other loud noises, such as thunderstorms or gunfire? If so, don’t despair, as this is a common problem affecting approximately 50% of our pet dogs, with many cats also becoming scared and anxious.
There are many ways in which you can help your pet, some of which may have immediate effects and some which can offer long-term behavioural changes. In all cases, the sooner you seek help and advice for your pet, the more effective the treatment is likely to be.
- Scullcap and Valerian tablets – a veterinary herbal medicine which is licensed to reduce anxiety, nervousness and excitability. Start treatment one week before the fireworks begin and continue for as long as necessary. Valerian Compound (liquid) is also available and is especially useful for cats and as a “top-up” when using the tablets to help during particularly stressful moments. Dose – 1 tablet per 5kg bodyweight, divided into two equal doses, morning and night. Cost – from 6p per tablet.
- DAP (Dog Appeasing Pheromone) and Feliway Diffusers – a simple plug-in device (air-freshner style) that emits odourless dog or cat pheromones into your house. Pheromones are the natural scent markers left by dogs and cats as they rub, scratch or urinate on their territory. Your pet will start to feel more relaxed as they become aware of the apparently familiar scent around their immediate environment (ie your house). The diffuser is best switched on 3-4 weeks before the fireworks begin and can be left in place for as long as required. Refills are available, plus DAP collars are now available in a range of sizes. Cost - £27.45 per diffuser, £18.83 per refill and collars from £20.56.
- CLIX Noises and Sounds CD - these are best used during the months leading up to the firework season. They work on desensitizing your pet to the loud and scary sounds made by fireworks, thunder and gunshots, etc. Start off by playing the CD at a low level, gradually increasing the volume as your pet adjusts. Full instructions are included. Cost - £8.41.
